The Texas Instruments SN65HVD82D is a half-duplex RS422/RS485 transceiver in an 8-SOIC package, designed for industrial communication links up to 250 kbps.
At 250 kbps this is a slew-limited transceiver, not a high-speed 20 Mbps or 50 Mbps part. The trade-off is intentional: the controlled edge rate reduces EMI emissions and signal reflections on unterminated or lightly-terminated stubs, making it a good fit for drop-and-chain topologies in Modbus RTU, BACnet MS/TP, or DMX512 installations. If your application needs faster polling cycles or larger data payloads per frame, look at the 20 Mbps SN65HVD7x family instead.
5 V supply — not a 3.3 V part
If your system is 3.3 V only, you need the SN65HVD32 or similar 3.3 V RS485 transceiver. The 5 V supply buys you larger differential output voltage for longer cable segments — useful when the bus spans hundreds of metres.
