At 400 kbps this part sits in the mid-speed tier of RS485 transceivers — fast enough for Modbus RTU at 115.2 kbps with headroom, or Profibus DP at 12 Mbps it won't reach. If your application needs the full 10 Mbps or 50 Mbps class, this isn't the part; but for the majority of industrial sensor networks and PLC links, 400 kbps keeps the edge rates slow enough to run on unshielded twisted pair without worrying about reflections on a 100 m run.
Full duplex vs half duplex — wiring matters
Full duplex means separate transmit and receive pairs — four wires instead of two. The SN65HVD71D drives both pairs simultaneously, so your protocol layer doesn't need to manage direction turn-around. That's a clean fit for point-to-point RS422 links or multi-drop RS485 systems where the master talks on one pair and slaves reply on another. Just be sure your backplane or cable harness has the extra pair budgeted.
3.3 V supply — no 5 V tolerance
If your system runs a 5 V bus or the UART on the controller side is 5 V, you'll need a level translator or a different transceiver variant. The bus pins (A, B, Y, Z) are RS485 levels, not logic levels — those are separate — but the VCC pin won't survive 5 V.
