What the 5 Mbps rating means for your bus
At 5 Mbps the SN65HVD51D supports cable runs of roughly 100-200 meters before signal degradation forces a lower data rate or repeater. This is faster than the common 250 kbps or 1 Mbps industrial RS-485 parts, but slower than 10-50 Mbps PROFIBUS or RS-422 variants. For a 115.2 kbps or 1 Mbps link, the 5 Mbps rating provides ample margin — the driver slew rate is not limited, so edge rates are fast; keep stub lengths under 6 inches to avoid reflections.
