Full-duplex means separate pairs for transmit and receive — no direction pin to toggle, no turnaround delay. That makes it the part you reach for when the protocol wants simultaneous send and receive, like Modbus RTU on a four-wire bus or a point-to-point RS422 link. The 1 Mbps data rate covers most industrial fieldbus speeds, though the 50 mV of receiver hysteresis gives you some noise margin on long cable runs.

The 8-SOIC footprint is standard for rework.
