5 V supply rail — not a 3.3 V part
If your system runs a 3.3 V backplane, you will need a level shifter or a different transceiver variant. The 1 Mbps data rate is the ceiling — actual throughput depends on cable length, termination, and the number of nodes on the bus. For shorter runs at lower speeds the part works fine, but do not expect 1 Mbps across 1200 m of twisted pair without careful termination.
For new designs this means standard lead times and no forced redesign cycle. That said, the RS-485 market has multiple pin-compatible options from TI and other vendors, so dual-sourcing is straightforward if you want supply-chain resilience.
