If your system runs on 3.3 V, you need a level translator or a different transceiver. The 8-DIP through-hole package is a deliberate choice: it survives higher vibration than an SOIC footprint and fits socketed prototyping boards, but it consumes more board area than an SO-8. For production runs where pick-and-place speed matters, consider the SOIC-8 variant (SN65HVD05D) — same silicon, same performance, smaller footprint.
TI lists the SN65HVD05P as Active. For dual-sourcing resilience, the SN65HVD05 family shares the same pinout across data-rate options (SN65HVD03, SN65HVD07, etc.), so a speed-grade swap is a direct drop-in without board rework.
