250 kbps data rate — what it buys on the bus
At 250 kbps this transceiver comfortably handles 115200 baud with a 2x oversampling margin, but it will not sustain the 1 Mbps rates some newer RS-232 parts claim. If your design needs 460800 baud or higher, look at the MAX3223 family with 1 Mbps capability. For the vast majority of legacy serial ports, bar-code scanners, and PLC programming cables, 250 kbps is the right tier — no overpaying for speed you cannot use.
Dropout at the low end is not an issue — the charge pump generates the RS-232 ±5 V swing from a 3 V rail internally. Just ensure the supply bypass cap is 0.1 µF close to the VCC pin per the reference layout.
There is no last-time-buy notice in effect, and no successor part number has been issued. This part can be qualified into a production BOM without a near-term end-of-life contingency plan.
