The MAX3222EIDB is a 2-driver, 2-receiver full-duplex RS232 transceiver from Texas Instruments, part of the MAX3222 family. It handles serial data at up to 500 kbps and runs from a 3V to 5.5V supply, which means it can sit on either a 3.3V or 5V logic rail without a level shifter. The 300 mV receiver hysteresis gives some noise margin on the incoming line.
The 500 kbps data rate is the ceiling for the RS232 signaling; if your UART runs at 115200 baud or 256000 baud, there is comfortable margin. The 3V to 5.5V supply range is the practical advantage here — you can drop this into a legacy 5V system or a modern 3.3V design without adding a separate regulator for the RS232 rail. The 2/2 driver/receiver count handles the basic TX/RX pair plus hardware flow control (RTS/CTS) on a single chip.
Package and rework note
The 20-SSOP package is a fine-pitch surface-mount part (0.65 mm typical lead pitch). No exposed pad, so the thermal path is through the leads only — keep the ambient below 85°C if you are pushing all four channels near the supply rail.
