RS-232 transceiver with a wide supply window
That same supply pin powers the charge-pump voltage doubler, so the part generates its own ±5.5 V driver rails internally. No external DC-DC converter is needed. For a 5 V-only system, the upper end of the range gives full compliance without any derating.
Data rate and duplex
Full-duplex operation at 500 kbps means both transmit and receive paths can run simultaneously at that rate. In practice, most RS-232 links run at 115.2 kbps or lower, so the 500 kbps ceiling gives plenty of headroom for error-free framing even with a few metres of cable. The 300 mV hysteresis on the receiver inputs helps reject noise that would otherwise cause bit errors on longer or noisier lines.
It is suited for indoor equipment — desktop peripherals, point-of-sale terminals, industrial controllers in conditioned spaces — but not for outdoor or under-hood automotive use where the ambient can drop below freezing or climb above 70°C. If the design needs extended temperature, look at the industrial-grade variant in the same family.
