Active production, automotive-qualified transient suppressor
The 1.5SMC120AH is an active-production Zener TVS diode from Taiwan Semiconductor Corporation's 1.5SMC series, carrying AEC-Q101 qualification for automotive-grade reliability. The DO-214AB (SMC) package is a standard surface-mount footprint for TVS diodes in this power class, hand-solderable with reasonable care — the tab is wide enough for a fine-tip iron if you pre-tin the pad. AEC-Q101 Grade 1 qualification means it's characterized across -55°C to 150°C junction temperature, covering under-hood and industrial enclosure environments without derating surprises.
Protection window and pulse capability
The reverse standoff voltage of 102V means the diode stays high-impedance below that level — your protected circuit sees no leakage penalty during normal operation. Breakdown starts at 114V minimum, and clamping is guaranteed at 165V maximum with a 9.5A peak pulse current. That 53V window between standoff and clamp gives enough margin for a 100V nominal rail with 10-15% tolerance plus switching ripple. For shorter pulses (like 8/20µs from ESD or lightning), the peak power capability is significantly higher; the datasheet's pulse-derating curve shows the multiplier. Single unidirectional channel, so polarity matters in the layout — the cathode band goes toward the protected rail.
