Zero-crossing triac driver for resistive and inductive loads
The MOC3042TVM is a 1-channel optoisolator with a triac output and a built-in zero-crossing detection circuit, rated for 400 V off-state and 4170 Vrms isolation. The zero-crossing circuit fires the internal triac only near the AC mains zero voltage, which minimises inrush current when switching resistive loads like heaters or incandescent lamps and reduces EMI from inductive loads such as small motors or solenoids. The 1 kV/µs minimum static dV/dt rating provides noise immunity against fast transients on the AC line, keeping the output triac from false-triggering on line noise or switching spikes.
Package and board-fit for rework and retrofit
Housed in a 6-DIP through-hole package with 0.400-inch (10.16 mm) body width, the MOC3042TVM drops into the same footprint as standard DIP-6 optoisolators. The through-hole leads are rework-friendly under a soldering iron or hot-air station — no paste stencil needed, and the package body is large enough to read the pin-1 dot without magnification. The tube packaging (50 per tube typical for this DIP size) suits both prototype hand-stuffing and medium-volume wave-solder runs.
