5000Vrms isolation — the safety barrier for your signal path
The onsemi HCPL2531TSVM is a dual-channel optocoupler delivering 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between input and output — the rating that defines its role as a safety barrier in circuits where ground potential differences or transient voltages must not couple through the signal path. With a DC input and transistor output, it couples logic-level signals across the isolation boundary, making it a fit for PLC digital inputs, motor-drive feedback, and isolated communication interfaces where the 5000Vrms withstand voltage provides the creepage and clearance margin for reinforced insulation per IEC 60950-1.
A 19% floor means the output transistor can sink at least 3 mA from a 20V rail when the LED is driven at 16 mA, which is sufficient to pull a standard TTL or CMOS input low through a pull-up resistor. Turn-on and turn-off times are 250 ns and 260 ns typical respectively — the combined propagation delay of roughly half a microsecond sets the upper data rate at about 1 Mbps before pulse-width distortion becomes significant. For isolated serial buses like RS-485 or CAN at 250 kbps, this margin is comfortable.
Industrial temperature range and surface-mount assembly
The 8-SMD Gull Wing package (supplier device package 8-SMD) is a surface-mount form factor compatible with standard reflow soldering profiles. The Gull Wing leads provide visual solder-joint inspection access and relieve mechanical stress between the package body and the board during thermal cycling.
