5000Vrms isolation with 20kV/µs CMTI — what it buys the gate-drive design
The FOD8480TR2 is a single-channel gate-drive optocoupler from onsemi, rated for 5000Vrms isolation and a minimum common-mode transient immunity of 20kV/µs. In a motor-drive or inverter half-bridge, that CMTI floor means the output stays latched when the high-side switch swings 600V in tens of nanoseconds — false triggering from dV/dt coupling is suppressed. Propagation delay is 300ns max for both tpLH and tpHL. That sets the minimum dead-time you must insert between the high- and low-side gate signals; a 300ns window leaves 200ns margin before shoot-through in a 500ns dead-time budget. Output supply range is 4.5V to 30V, covering 5V logic rails up to 24V IGBT gate drives. The output can source or sink 2.5mA — enough to drive a standard IGBT gate through a booster stage, but not directly for large modules.
Industrial temperature grade and package — board-fit realities
Operating temperature spans -40°C to 100°C. The 6-SOP wide-body package is 6.80 mm wide. Pulse-width distortion is 250ns max. In a PWM signal path, that skew between the input and output edges adds to the dead-time uncertainty; budget it in the controller's dead-time register.
Active production — sourcing and compliance
Cut Tape (CT) is also available for prototype or low-volume builds. Approvals include IEC/EN/DIN and UL, covering the safety certifications required for reinforced isolation in mains-connected equipment. No AEC-Q grade is listed, so this part is not qualified for automotive use.
