Gate-drive optocoupler for inverter and motor-drive isolation
The FOD8480 is a single-channel optocoupler from onsemi designed to drive IGBTs and power MOSFETs across a reinforced isolation barrier. Its 5000Vrms isolation rating and 20kV/µs minimum common-mode transient immunity make it suited for motor-drive, solar-inverter, and industrial power-supply applications where noise on the high-voltage side must not couple back to the controller.
Switching speed and timing margin
Maximum propagation delay is 300ns for both tpHL and tpLH, with a pulse-width distortion ceiling of 250ns. Typical rise and fall times are 15ns and 10ns respectively. These numbers define the minimum dead-time you must budget between high-side and low-side switch transitions in a half-bridge topology — a 300ns delay at 20kHz switching means roughly 0.6% of the period is lost to propagation, which is acceptable for most IGBT gate-drive designs.
Supply range and drive capability
The output side operates from 4.5V to 30V, covering standard gate-drive supply rails for both low-voltage MOSFETs and higher-voltage IGBTs. Output current is rated 2.5mA source and 2.5mA sink — sufficient to drive the gate capacitance of a small IGBT or MOSFET through an external gate resistor, but for larger modules you will want a downstream buffer stage.
