Single-channel 10 Mbps optoisolator with reinforced isolation
The FOD8163TR2V is a single-channel digital optoisolator from onsemi rated at 10 Mbps data rate. It provides 5000 Vrms isolation — sufficient for reinforced insulation in mains-referenced industrial interfaces like motor drives, PLC I/O, and medical equipment where the safety barrier must hold off 250 VAC working voltage with margin. The output is Open Collector with Schottky clamping, which limits the output saturation voltage to roughly 0.4 V at low current — this keeps the logic-low level clean for 3.3V or 5V CMOS receivers without an extra external pull-down. Common-mode transient immunity is a minimum 20 kV/µs — critical when the isolator sits on a noisy bus or where fast-switching power FETs inject common-mode noise across the barrier. Below that figure the output may glitch, so this part suits motor-drive and inverter applications where edge rates exceed 10 kV/µs.
Timing and drive margins for 3.3V and 5V buses
Propagation delay is 90 ns max for low-to-high and 80 ns max for high-to-low, with rise/fall times of 20 ns and 10 ns typical. For a 10 Mbps NRZ signal, a 90 ns propagation delay consumes less than one unit interval (100 ns per bit), leaving ~10 ns timing budget for the rest of the path — adequate for most fieldbus or isolated SPI links but tight for backplane clocks. The LED forward voltage is 1.45 V typical at 25 °C, and the maximum forward current is 25 mA. Driving it from a 3.3V rail through a 220 Ω resistor yields roughly 8.4 mA — enough to saturate the output photodiode without exceeding the LED power rating. For 5V supplies, a 470 Ω resistor gives similar margin. Output current per channel is rated at 50 mA — the Schottky clamp reduces the voltage drop, so the output can sink a standard TTL load (4–8 mA) without heating the die. At 50 mA continuous, the 6-SOIC package thermal rise stays under 40 °C at 25 °C ambient, per typical RthJA of 120 °C/W for this package.
Active production, tape & reel or cut tape ordering
The CT option suits prototype and low-volume builds where you prefer smaller quantities without reel minimums — available in 1–50 piece increments from distribution. Supply voltage range is 3 V to 5.5 V, covering 3.3V and 5V logic families. The operating temperature range of -40°C to 100°C covers industrial enclosures and outdoor telecom cabinets, though the 100 °C ceiling is the junction limit — derate output current above 85 °C ambient.
Package and isolation barrier design checklist
The 6-SOIC package has a 6.80 mm body width — the wide-body gives 8 mm minimum creepage distance between the input and output pins, which supports the 5000 Vrms rating for reinforced insulation per IEC 60747-5-5. The 6-SOP supplier device package footprint is the same as standard SOIC-6 wide; use the recommended pad layout in the datasheet to maintain the creepage. Input side: DC input type — the LED anode and cathode are pins 2 and 3 on the 6-SOIC, with the base pin (pin 1) left open or tied to the input ground. Output side: pins 5 (collector) and 6 (emitter) form the open-collector output; the Schottky clamp is internal between collector and emitter.
