The Omron EE-SX872 is a through-beam photoelectric sensor with a 5 mm slot width, built for presence detection in assembly lines, packaging machinery, and automated handling equipment. It outputs an NPN open-collector signal that switches low when the beam is uninterrupted (Light-ON logic), making it a direct fit for 5 V PLC digital input cards or microcontroller GPIOs. The 5 V supply rail is standard in industrial control cabinets, so no extra regulator is needed.
Compared to the EE-SPX613, which offers selectable Dark-ON/Light-ON output, the EE-SX872 is fixed to Light-ON. If your application requires Dark-ON logic (output active when the beam is broken), the EE-SPX613 is the adjustable alternative. The EE-SX872 also operates down to -25°C, whereas the EE-SPX613 is rated from -10°C, giving the EE-SX872 a wider low-temperature margin for unheated factory floors.
Mounting uses M3 screws through the chassis-mount tabs; the slot is 5 mm deep, so the target flag or vane must be under 5 mm thick to pass through without contact. The NPN output sinks up to 35 mA — enough to drive a small relay or PLC input directly, but not a high-current load. Wire the collector to the input with a pull-up resistor to 5 V; the emitter connects to ground. The -25°C to 55°C operating range suits indoor industrial environments; avoid outdoor or condensing locations.
