Product details

Dropout headroom and load regulation

The MIC2937A-12WT delivers a fixed 12V output at up to 750mA with a maximum dropout voltage of 0.75V at full load. With 300µA quiescent current and a 16mA maximum supply current, the regulator's own overhead is low enough for always-on rails in battery-backed systems. The 300µA Iq is what the control circuitry draws when the pass element is delivering current; the 16mA max supply figure covers the full operating envelope including start-up.

Thermal and protection story

The junction can ride above 125°C under load, but the die is rated for the entire span without derating the output current — the thermal shutdown kicks in before the die sees damage. On-chip over-current and over-temperature protection means the part handles sustained shorts or high ambient without external clamp diodes or crowbar circuits. The current limit folds back, reducing output current as the die heats, so a dead short doesn't cook the regulator before the thermal shutdown engages.

The TO-220-3 through-hole package has the tab tied to the output pin. That means any heatsink attached to the tab carries the 12V output — the heatsink must be electrically isolated from ground, or the tab must be left floating. The three-lead footprint is standard; the centre lead is the output, the left is the input, the right is ground.
