1.5 A in an SOIC-8 — what the thermal budget really says
The Microchip MCP1727-3002E/SN is a single-output positive LDO that delivers a fixed 3 V rail at up to 1.5 A from a maximum 6 V input. The 8-SOIC package (0.154" wide, 3.90 mm body) is the same footprint as a standard op-amp, which means the 1.5 A rating is thermally constrained by board copper and airflow — not the silicon limit. With the 0.55 V max dropout at full load, the part dissipates about 0.83 W at 1.5 A (3.6 V in, 3 V out). That is manageable on a two-layer board with a pours, but marginal without. The 220 µA quiescent current is moderate for this current class; it matters if the regulator is always on in a battery-powered design. Enable and Power Good control features let you sequence the rail and monitor its status. Protection includes over-temperature, short-circuit, and under-voltage lockout (UVLO).
60 dB PSRR at 100 Hz — what it cleans up
The 60 dB PSRR at 100 Hz means the output rejects input ripple by a factor of 1000 at that frequency. That is useful when the LDO follows a switching regulator running at 100 kHz or higher — the PSRR rolls off above a few kHz, so the bulk of the switching noise is attenuated by the output capacitor, not the regulator. For a 3 V rail feeding an analog front-end or a sensitive ADC reference, pair this with a low-ESR 10 µF ceramic on the output and keep the input bypass tight. The 60 dB figure is typical at 100 Hz; expect less rejection at higher frequencies.
Microchip lists the MCP1727-3002E/SN as Active. For a BOM planner, that removes the pressure to stock a last-time-buy or qualify a substitute. The part is ROHS3 compliant.
