1500 W bidirectional clamp for harsh environments
The 1N6142A is a 1500 W peak-pulse-power Zener TVS diode from Microchip Technology, designed to clamp transients on a single bidirectional channel. It is rated for a reverse standoff voltage of 7.6 V and clamps at 14.5 V when hit with a 103.4 A, 10/1000 µs surge waveform. The -55°C to 175°C junction temperature range suits it for avionics, downhole drilling, and under-hood automotive environments where the ambient can push past 125°C.
The 14.5 V clamping voltage at 103.4 A (10/1000 µs) tells you the maximum voltage the downstream circuit sees during the surge. If your 7.6 V rail has a 15 V absolute-maximum input rating on the regulator, this clamp provides a 0.5 V margin — tight but workable. The 1500 W peak-pulse rating assumes the junction starts at 25°C; at 175°C the derating curve in the datasheet reduces that capability, so thermal derating is required for continuous high-temperature operation.
Bidirectional — one part for both polarities
With a single bidirectional channel, the 1N6142A clamps equally on positive and negative transients. That saves a diode and a PCB via on AC-coupled signal lines, RS-485 pairs, or bipolar power rails where the return path sees the same surge energy. The symmetrical breakdown characteristic also eliminates the need to orient the part on the board — a time-saver for rework and assembly.
Active production — no end-of-life watch needed
Microchip lists the 1N6142A as Active. The axial-lead package (B, Axial) is a through-hole form factor that mates with standard 0.100-inch pitch prototyping boards and terminal blocks — no special footprint or stencil required.
