1 Ohm ESR — what it means for ripple and heating
The TPST106K016R1000: The 1 Ohm ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) sets the self-heating under ripple current. For a 10 µF part at 100 kHz, 1 Ohm ESR means the capacitor dissipates I²R heat in proportion to the AC current it carries — a 200 mA ripple current produces 40 mW of internal heating. In a power supply output filter, this ESR also contributes to output voltage ripple: the ripple voltage across the capacitor is the sum of the capacitive charge-discharge and the ESR × ripple current term. The -55°C to 125°C operating range covers industrial temperature environments and the upper end of automotive under-hood applications. At the high end, the leakage current and ESR both increase with temperature, so the derating curve matters more than the room-temperature spec for designs running near 105°C or above.
