The 12 ns access time is the headline speed rating for this asynchronous SRAM. In a system with a 50 MHz bus (20 ns cycle), a 12 ns access leaves 8 ns of setup margin before the next clock edge — enough to avoid wait-state insertion in most 8/16-bit microcontroller and DSP designs. If your processor's memory controller expects a faster device (8 ns or 10 ns), this part may still work with a single wait state; if it expects 15 ns, the 12 ns part gives extra timing margin.
44-SOJ package — footprint and handling
The 44-SOJ (Small Outline J-lead) package, 0.400" body width, is a surface-mount form factor common in mid-1990s through 2010s memory designs. J-leads offer better solder-joint inspection access than BGA and better thermal cycling performance than gull-wing leads in extended-temperature environments. The package is not RoHS-restricted by its tube shipping medium; the -VXE suffix indicates lead-free (RoHS-compliant) finish.
