High-side switch for 12 V automotive loads — what the ratings mean
The Infineon BTS500801EGAAUMA1 is a single-channel PROFET® high-side switch rated for 13 A continuous output with a typical on-resistance of 8 mOhm. It switches a 9 V to 16 V load supply — the standard automotive 12 V bus including cold-crank dips and load-dump peaks — and protects the wiring and load with fixed current limiting, open-load detection, over-temperature shutdown, and over-voltage clamping.
8 mOhm Rds(on) — the thermal and voltage-drop budget
At 13 A the 8 mOhm typical on-resistance drops just over 100 mV across the switch and dissipates about 1.35 W. That power sits inside the PG-DSO-12-16 exposed-pad package, so the PCB copper area under the pad sets the effective thermal resistance. The 150°C junction ceiling leaves headroom for ambient under-hood temperatures above 100°C, but the layout must pull heat into the board plane.
Package and mounting
The 12-BSOP (0.295", 7.50 mm width) exposed-pad package — Infineon's PG-DSO-12-16 — is a surface-mount body with a large thermal pad on the underside. The narrow 0.50 mm pitch leads demand careful solder-paste stencil alignment, but the pad itself is the primary thermal path, not the leads.
Infineon lists the BTS500801EGAAUMA1 as obsolete. No official successor order code appears on the record. For BOM lines that still call out this exact PROFET® variant, the supply path runs through independent distribution — new-old-stock inventory, surplus lots, or broker-sourced material. Every unit should be date-code traced and the laser etch on the package face checked against Infineon's factory marking standards; the risk of re-marked or relabeled stock rises once the authorized channel closes out.
