What the 1.5SMCJ16 actually does
The 1.5SMCJ16 is a unidirectional Zener-based transient voltage suppressor in the DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package — a single-channel TVS designed to clamp voltage spikes on a protected rail before they reach downstream circuitry. At the peak pulse condition (52.1A for a 10/1000 µs surge), the clamping voltage is held to 28.8V maximum — meaning the downstream load sees 28.8V at its worst-case spike, not the full surge voltage. The 1500W peak pulse rating defines the energy the device can absorb during a single surge event without degradation — this is the primary selection axis for TVS diodes in protection circuits.
Junction temperature and thermal margin
Maximum junction temperature is 150°C with a rating of -50°C cold start — the device tolerates both full freezer environments and enclosed boards that run hot, as long as the transient energy stays within the 1500W pulse rating. Thermal runaway is not a concern at steady state since a TVS conducts only during a fault event. For board-level layout, the SMC package thermal pad under the cathode tab carries heat into the board copper; derating the clamping voltage under repeated pulses follows the vendor's pulse-derating curve — the datasheet plots this explicitly against pulse width and duty cycle.
Surface-mount fit and assembly compatibility
No power-line protection flag means this part is selected for signal-line or localized rail clamping, not bus-level protection schemes.
