At 1 Mbps the transceiver supports the full RS-232 data rate ceiling for short-haul links — typical distances stay under 15 metres at this speed, limited by cable capacitance rather than the driver slew rate. The 500 mV receiver hysteresis filters out noise picked up on longer cable runs: a signal that crosses the threshold once latches the output cleanly, preventing the bit-error rate from climbing on electrically noisy factory floors.
