Two-channel unidirectional isolator in a compact 8-SOIC
The ADUM1281ARZ-RL7 is a two-channel, unidirectional digital isolator from Analog Devices' iCoupler series, built around magnetic coupling technology. It provides 3000Vrms of galvanic isolation across a 3V to 5.5V supply range, with one channel on each side of the isolation barrier. The 8-SOIC footprint keeps the board area small — useful when you need to isolate a couple of digital signals without dedicating a larger package.
1Mbps data rate and 25kV/µs transient immunity
Rated for 1Mbps data rate with a typical rise/fall time of 2.5ns, this part handles standard UART, SPI (at lower clock rates), and general-purpose logic-level isolation. The 50ns max propagation delay and 10ns pulse-width distortion keep timing predictable for most control and sensor interfaces. Common-mode transient immunity of 25kV/µs minimum means it holds its state through fast voltage spikes — a spec that matters in motor-drive or inverter environments where the ground plane can bounce hard.
It ships in Tape & Reel (the RL7 suffix) and is also available in cut tape for prototype quantities. The part is ROHS3 compliant. No LTB or NRND flags — it is a safe selection for new designs.
Rework and assembly notes
The 8-SOIC package (3.90mm body width) is straightforward under a hot-air station — the leads are on a 1.27mm pitch, so there is room to get the iron or nozzle in without cooking adjacent parts. No exposed pad means no thermal via stitching required, though the part's dissipation is low enough that it rarely matters. Standard MSL sensitivity applies — check the bag label for floor life, but SOIC packages are generally forgiving.
