The 5.0SMDJ16CA/TR13: The standoff voltage of 16 V defines the rail this part protects — transients below 16 V see a high-impedance path, so the downstream circuit runs undisturbed during normal operation. At 5 kW peak pulse capacity, the device absorbs a substantial transient energy burst before the clamping ceiling is reached — enough to handle the load-dump and inductive kick profiles common in 12 V and 24 V automotive and industrial supply rails.
Junction temperature range and unidirectional polarity
A 150°C TJ ceiling with reasonable derating gives meaningful headroom against the -55°C cold start transients seen in outdoor equipment and engine-bay adjacent modules. Single bidirectional channel means this is a unidirectional TVS — it clamps positive-going transients on a single polarity rail. For dual-polarity protection (both positive and negative spikes), a dual-diode or back-to-back device would be required.
