1500W peak pulse — what the clamp rating means for your rail
The 1.5KE56A/B: That energy rating alone doesn't tell you the protection threshold: the 47.8V reverse standoff means the diode stays off below that rail voltage, so a nominal 48V bus sees no leakage penalty during normal operation. When the surge hits, breakdown triggers at 53.2V minimum, clamping the transient to 77V maximum while shunting 19.7A peak pulse current. The 77V clamp is the let-through voltage the downstream components must survive — a 75V-rated capacitor on the same rail would be marginal; a 100V-rated part has comfortable margin.
Package and board integration
The axial body sits inline with the trace; the leads are typically bent 90° for vertical board mounting or formed for surface-mount reflow with a separate lead form. The junction operates from -55°C to 150°C, covering cold-start telecom outdoor cabinets and engine-bay heat soak, though the peak power derates above 25°C per the datasheet curve.
