What the 400 V / 8 A rating means for your power supply
The VS-KBPC804PBF is a single-phase bridge rectifier from Vishay's VS-KBPC8 series, built in the standard D-72 through-hole package. It converts AC to pulsating DC — the four diodes inside steer both halves of the AC cycle so the load sees a unidirectional current. Rated for 400 V peak reverse voltage (Vrrm) and 8 A average rectified current (Io), this part handles the common 240 VAC mains rectified to about 340 VDC under load. The 8 A average is the DC output current the junction can sustain continuously — not a surge rating, so a 10 A fuse on the AC side gives headroom without exceeding the die's thermal limit. Forward voltage drop is 1 V maximum at 3 A — at the full 8 A the drop will be higher, but the 1 V figure at a lower current gives a baseline for estimating conduction loss. Reverse leakage is 10 µA at the rated 400 V, which is low enough that it won't heat the junction at idle.
Thermal and mechanical fit for the board
The D-72 package is a 4-square through-hole footprint with a central mounting hole — the tab is the cathode common, and the four pins are the AC inputs and DC output. Because the package is bulk (not tape-and-reel), it ships loose in tubes or trays — typical for through-hole power rectifiers that are hand-inserted or wave-soldered. The through-hole leads anchor the part against vibration better than a surface-mount equivalent in the same power class.
