Optocoupler for signal isolation in industrial and power systems
The VOL617A-4X001T: It provides 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between input and output, suitable for breaking ground loops and protecting low-voltage logic from high-side transients in motor drives, PLC I/O modules, and switch-mode power supplies.
The 5000Vrms isolation rating is tested per component-level standards; in practice, the 4-SOP package creepage distance sets the working voltage ceiling for the application. For reinforced insulation in mains-connected equipment, the PCB layout must maintain the required clearance under the optocoupler body. This spread means the output transistor can sink 8mA to 16mA from a 5mA input — enough to drive a logic gate input or a low-power relay directly. The 320% ceiling ensures the part does not saturate the downstream receiver at nominal drive, while the 160% floor guarantees the output switches under worst-case LED degradation over temperature and lifetime. Output side ratings: 80V collector-emitter maximum with 50mA continuous output current. The 400mV Vce(sat) at rated current keeps the voltage drop low enough to maintain a clean logic-high into a 5V or 3.3V CMOS input without a pull-up resistor adjustment. Switching speed is characterised by 3.5µs rise and 5µs fall times typical, with turn-on/turn-off times of 6µs and 5.5µs. This limits the part to data rates below about 100 kbit/s — adequate for 50/60 Hz zero-crossing detection, status feedback from contactors, or slow analog multiplexing, but not for high-speed fieldbus isolation.
Temperature range and deployment environment
Rated for -55°C to +110°C operating ambient, the VOL617A-4X001T covers industrial and automotive under-hood temperature profiles. The wide range means no derating is needed for most factory-floor or outdoor telecom enclosures, though the CTR does shift with temperature — the 160% minimum at 25°C tightens at the cold end and loosens at the hot end, so a design should budget 20% margin on the LED drive current.
