5300Vrms isolation, 2.5A peak — gate drive for industrial power stages
The Vishay VO3120 is a single-channel optocoupler gate driver designed for driving IGBTs and MOSFETs in motor drives, inverters, and switch-mode power supplies. Its 5300Vrms isolation rating provides reinforced galvanic isolation between the low-voltage control side and the high-voltage power stage, while the 2.5A peak output current delivers the gate charge needed for fast switching of medium-power devices. Common-mode transient immunity of 25kV/µs (minimum) ensures the output remains stable during fast voltage slewing on the high-side rail — a critical parameter in half-bridge and full-bridge topologies where dv/dt can exceed 10kV/µs. Propagation delay is 400ns max (both tpLH and tpHL), with pulse-width distortion limited to 200ns max. These timing specs allow dead-time budgeting in the tens of microseconds range, suitable for switching frequencies up to several tens of kHz.
Through-hole 8-DIP — legacy footprint, reliable isolation
The VO3120 comes in an 8-DIP (0.300", 7.62mm) through-hole package. This is a standard, widely used footprint for optocoupler gate drivers, making it straightforward to retrofit into existing designs or specify for new boards where through-hole assembly is preferred for thermal or mechanical robustness. The LED forward voltage is 1.6V typical (1.6V max), with a maximum DC forward current of 25 mA — design the input resistor accordingly to stay within the LED's safe operating area over temperature.
Approvals include cUR and UR recognition, confirming safety certification for North American markets.
