5300Vrms isolation in a 4-DIP through-hole package
The Vishay SFH618A-5 is a single-channel optocoupler with a phototransistor output, designed for galvanic isolation in industrial, power-supply, and signal-isolation applications. It provides 5300Vrms of isolation voltage in a standard 4-DIP through-hole package, making it a straightforward drop-in for boards that need to separate high-voltage and low-voltage domains without adding a separate isolated DC-DC stage. The current transfer ratio (CTR) is specified at 250% minimum and 500% maximum when the forward current is 1mA, which gives a wide margin for driving logic inputs or low-current loads. The transistor output can handle up to 55V and 50mA continuous, with a typical Vce saturation of 400mV at the rated forward current. This suits 50/60 Hz line-frequency isolation, relay drivers, PLC input modules, and general-purpose status feedback where sub-microsecond timing is not required.
Temperature range and operating environment
The 100°C ceiling is the junction limit, so derate the output current if the board runs near that boundary for extended periods. The forward voltage is typically 1.1V at the rated forward current, and the maximum DC forward current is 60mA, so a simple series resistor from a 3.3V or 5V logic rail sets the LED drive without exceeding the absolute maximum.
