Isolation and CTR — the two numbers that decide fit
The SFH617A-4X016 is a Vishay 1-channel phototransistor optocoupler in a 4-DIP through-hole package. Its 5300Vrms isolation rating means it can withstand transient voltages up to that level between input and output — a common requirement for galvanic isolation in industrial PLC I/O modules, motor drive feedback, and AC mains sensing circuits where safety isolation is mandated by IEC 60950 or UL 1577. The current transfer ratio (CTR) is binned to 160-320% at If=10mA, Vce=5V. This wide min-to-max spread means the design must tolerate a 2:1 variation in output current for a given LED drive — typical for standard-grade optocouplers. The 400mV Vce saturation at 50mA output ensures the transistor pulls close to ground when fully on, leaving headroom for the downstream logic threshold.
Switching speed and temperature profile
Rise and fall times are 2µs typical each; turn-on is 3µs, turn-off 2.3µs. This places the SFH617A-4X016 in the standard-speed optocoupler class — adequate for 10-100 kHz data rates in isolated serial interfaces or PWM feedback, but not for high-speed digital isolation where a logic-output optocoupler would be needed. Operating temperature spans -55°C to +110°C, covering industrial and extended-temperature environments. The 60mA max forward current and 50mA per-channel output give a comfortable margin for typical 5-10mA LED drive in low-power isolated circuits.
Lifecycle and compliance — active, no end-of-life watch needed
Tube packaging is typical for DIP optocouplers — the tubes protect the leads during handling and are compatible with automatic tube feeders on assembly lines.
