5300Vrms isolation for motor-drive and industrial controls
The Vishay IL420 is a single-channel optoisolator with a triac output, designed for AC load switching in industrial environments. Its 5300Vrms isolation voltage provides a reinforced barrier for separating low-voltage control logic from high-voltage AC lines, common in motor drives, solid-state relays, and PLC output modules. The 600 V off-state blocking voltage suits 240 VAC and 277 VAC line switching with margin, while the 10kV/µs minimum static dV/dt prevents false triggering from line transients or inductive kickback — a real concern when driving contactors or solenoids.
Triac output — no zero-crossing, 300 mA RMS on-state
This part uses a non-zero-crossing triac output, meaning it fires immediately when the LED current exceeds the 2 mA trigger threshold. That makes it suitable for phase-control applications like dimmers or soft-start circuits where you need to switch at any point in the AC cycle. The on-state current is rated 300 mA RMS — enough for small relays, indicator lamps, or driving a larger external triac gate. Hold current is 500 µA, so it stays latched until the load current drops below that level near the zero crossing.

Housed in a 6-DIP package with 0.300-inch (7.62 mm) pin spacing, the IL420 is a standard through-hole part for wave-solder assembly. It carries CQC, CSA, cUR, and UR approvals, covering North American and Chinese safety standards — useful for export equipment.
