The 1N6279-E3/54: The 1N6279-/54 is a unidirectional TransZorb® TVS diode — Vishay's trade name for a Zener-based transient voltage suppressor in an axial DO-201AA package. The 1500 W peak pulse rating (10/1000 µs waveform) tells you it survives a single-event surge of that magnitude without clamping into thermal runaway, but it is a clamping device, not a filtering element — it dumps the surge energy to ground once the voltage exceeds the breakdown threshold. With a typical reverse standoff voltage of 17.8 V and a minimum breakdown of 19.8 V, the part sits above a 15–16 V rail with enough margin to stay off during normal operation but fires before the downstream load sees a damaging overvoltage. The maximum clamping voltage at 47 A peak pulse current is 31.9 V — that 14 V headroom between standoff and clamping is where the TVS does its work.
Temperature grade and what it opens up
The junction temperature, not ambient, is what the derating curve references: keep the steady-state dissipation below the derated value at your worst-case ambient and the 175 °C Tj ceiling has margin.
