Clamping ratings and what the 1.5SMC family delivers
The 1.5SMC9.1AHM3/I is a unidirectional Zener-type transient voltage suppressor — TransZorb® is Vishay's trade name for the Zener-based TVS architecture that clamps by avalanche breakdown, not by crowbar. The clamping voltage ceiling of 13.4 V means downstream circuits see a hard stop at that level — the tight window between standoff and clamping is the selection parameter that separates this part from lower-clamping or higher-clamping siblings in the same series. Do not extrapolate this directly to a continuous power budget; the pulse rating governs the transient withstand, not the steady-state dissipation. For a line that sees repeated clamping events, the thermal derating curve in the datasheet is the governing document — the junction must stay below 150 °C rated limit.
Automotive grade and thermal margin
Target applications are automotive and telecom — both environments where load-dump transients and ESD events are design-level threats. The DO-214AB (SMC) package is the standard pick-and-place compatible body for this power class; tape-and-reel packaging supports high-volume assembly runs. Surface-mount termination eliminates through-hole clinch steps but means the land pattern and solder-fillet inspection criteria are on you to define per IPC-A-610.
