Unidirectional TVS — what the clamping window means

The 1.5SMC75A-E3/57T: The 1.5SMC series is Vishay's TransZorb® family — their branded name for unidirectional transient voltage suppressor diodes that clamp through avalanche breakdown. With a 64.1 V reverse standoff, the diode idles off in normal operation and begins conducting once the transient pushes the line above the 71.3 V minimum breakdown threshold. At 104 V clamping voltage, the downstream circuit sees a defined overvoltage ceiling during the surge event — the downstream IC or rail stays within its abs-max rating if the transient energy is within the diode's rated 1.5 kW peak pulse capacity.

Peak pulse ratings — 1.5 kW and 14.6 A at 10/1000 µs

At this waveform, the 14.6 A peak pulse current is what the diode must conduct during the event — a faster waveform (8/20 µs) with the same clamped voltage would pull a higher peak current, so the 14.6 A figure is specific to this test condition.

DO-214AB SMC package and surface-mount integration

Available in Tape & Reel and Cut Tape packaging — the Cut Tape option suits NPI prototyping runs where a full reel is overkill.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1.5SMC75A-/57T a Zener or a TVS diode?

Vishay classifies this under Type Zener in their datasheet, but the device functions as a unidirectional TVS diode — it clamps transient overvoltages through avalanche breakdown, which is the standard mechanism for a transient voltage suppressor in this power class.
