Bidirectional TVS — what the CA suffix decides
The 1.5SMC62CA-M3/57T is a bidirectional transient voltage suppressor in the 1.5SMC TransZorb® series — the "CA" in the suffix flags it as the bidirectional polarity variant, meaning it clamps transients in both directions from a single two-terminal device. This is the choice for AC lines, differential signal pairs, or any circuit where the rail can be driven both positive and negative relative to ground. The unidirectional UA variant in the same series clamps only one polarity and is wrong for those applications — same footprint, opposite clamping behavior, and the BOM line must reflect which one was specified.
Standoff, breakdown, and clamping — the three voltages that size the protection
53 V reverse standoff (typ) is the maximum reverse voltage the TVS can block indefinitely without conducting — transients above this level trigger the clamp. The 58.9 V minimum breakdown voltage marks where conduction begins. At full peak pulse current the clamping voltage is held to 85 V maximum, which is the ceiling the downstream circuitry must withstand — this is the number circuit designers use when they calculate the stress on the protected node. The 1500 W peak pulse power rating reflects the energy the diode absorbs during that event — at 85 V clamping × 17.6 A the math works out to approximately 1.5 kW, confirming the waveform condition governs the rating rather than a generic abs-max.
Package, thermal range, and deployment fit
