Transient suppression for 459V DC rails
The 1.5SMC540A-M3/9AT: Its 459V reverse standoff voltage defines the maximum continuous DC rail it protects without conducting — above that, the device breaks down at a minimum of 513V and clamps transients to 740V at the rated 2.03A peak pulse current. This makes it suitable for protecting 400V-class DC buses or high-voltage telecom power feeds where the steady-state rail sits below 459V and transients need to be shunted before reaching downstream silicon.
Package and thermal considerations for board integration
The copper pad area under the cathode tab on the PCB sets the thermal resistance — a larger pad lowers RthJA and allows the device to absorb more pulse energy before reaching the 150°C limit.
The part is supplied in Tape & Reel packaging, consistent with automated pick-and-place assembly for volume production.
