If the transient pushes the line voltage above 49.9 V, the diode absorbs the energy until the upstream fuse or breaker clears — the clamping voltage is the hard ceiling the protected circuit sees. Breakdown starts at 34.2 V minimum, so the part begins conducting only when the transient exceeds that threshold.
