Clamping envelope and pulse rating
The 1.5SMC11A-E3/9AT: The 1.5SMC11A-/9AT is a 1500W peak pulse power (1.5kW) Zener TVS in the TransZorb® series, designed to clamp transients on general-purpose DC rails. That 96.2A peak pulse current is not a steady-state number — it is the surge the diode can absorb for the 10/1000µs double-exponential pulse shape. For a 12V nominal bus with a 10% tolerance (13.2V max), the 15.6V clamp gives roughly 2.4V of headroom above the rail ceiling, meaning the protected circuitry sees less than 16V even during a severe transient.
Package and board-fit
Housed in the DO-214AB (SMC) package, also designated as the SMCJ footprint. This is a standard surface-mount package with a 0.205-inch (5.21mm) body length and gull-wing leads — the same footprint used across the 1.5SMC family, so a single PCB land pattern serves the whole current range. No power line protection built in (the diode is for signal or low-power DC rails, not AC mains). Operating temperature spans -65°C to 150°C junction, covering military and industrial thermal environments. The single unidirectional channel means it protects one rail per device; for a bipolar rail you need two parts back-to-back.
