Surge protection for 12V rails — what the ratings mean
The 1.5KE15C-E3/54: The 1.5KE15C-/54 is a 1500W bidirectional TransZorb® TVS diode from Vishay, designed to clamp transients on DC power rails and signal lines. Its 12.1V reverse standoff voltage means it blocks normal 12V bus voltage without conducting, then begins clamping at 13.5V breakdown and holds the protected rail to 22V max during a 68.2A surge pulse.
Bidirectional clamping — one part for both polarities
With a single bidirectional channel, this diode clamps positive and negative surges symmetrically — a single DO-201AA axial device replaces two unidirectional TVS diodes in anti-series, saving board space and reducing BOM count on AC-coupled or bipolar signal lines.
Obsolete — sourcing through independent channels
The part remains a common cross-reference in the 1.5KE series, and the DO-201AA footprint is widely socketed in legacy designs. For new designs, a functionally equivalent bidirectional TVS in the same power class should be selected; the board-level pad pattern for the axial package is straightforward to adapt.
