Transient protection for 12V rails
The 1.5KE12A-E3/73: Its 10.2V reverse standoff voltage means it protects 12V DC rails — the diode remains non-conducting below 10.2V and only clamps transients that exceed the 11.4V minimum breakdown threshold.
What the ratings mean for the BOM line
The 89.8A peak pulse current at the 10/1000µs waveform is the surge it can absorb without failing short — a 12V automotive load-dump or inductive kickback that exceeds this current level will destroy the junction, so the source impedance of the transient must be considered. The 16.7V clamping voltage is the maximum the protected IC sees during the event; if the downstream part has a 14V abs-max rating, this TVS will not protect it. The breakdown voltage tolerance window (11.4V min to 16.7V clamp) is tight enough for 12V logic and sensor supplies but not for 5V or 3.3V rails; those need a lower standoff part.
Package and board integration
Through-hole axial package in DO-201AA (DO-27) outline — the leads are 0.96 mm diameter and the body is 5.3 mm diameter. It mounts in a 1.1 mm drilled hole and the leads are bent to the board or soldered into turret terminals. The axial form factor is common for point-to-point wiring and high-reliability through-hole assemblies where surface-mount reflow is not available.
