20-DIP footprint and board integration
The TC74HC245APF comes in a 20-DIP (0.300", 7.62mm) through-hole package — the standard 0.100-inch pin spacing fits perfboard, wire-wrap, or socketed layouts without a PCB spin. The 20-pin DIP body is 7.62 mm wide, so it occupies the same board real estate as a 74LS245 or 74HCT245, making it a drop-in swap for existing through-hole bus transceiver positions. Supply voltage spans 2V to 6V, covering both 5V TTL legacy rails and 3.3V CMOS logic without a separate level translator. The wide margin means the part tolerates a poorly regulated 5V rail that droops to 4.5V or spikes to 5.5V — common on prototype boards and repair benches.
8-bit bidirectional bus control
This is an 8-bit non-inverting transceiver with 3-state outputs — data flows in either direction under direction-pin control (DIR), and the output-enable pin (OE) can isolate the bus entirely. That makes it the right part for a shared data bus where multiple peripherals talk to a microcontroller: one TC74HC245APF buffers the bus, and the 3-state outputs prevent contention when the MCU is not driving. Output drive is 7.8 mA source and sink at the rated supply voltage — enough to drive up to 10 standard LSTTL loads or 5 CMOS loads per output. If your bus needs to drive LEDs, relays, or long cables, plan on adding a buffer stage; the 7.8 mA limit is the fan-out ceiling, not a load-driver.
Industrial temperature and compliance
The 74HC family logic thresholds are CMOS-compatible, so the part works with 3.3V microcontrollers without level-shifting at the input pins.
