Controller architecture and topology fit
The UCC2897PW-TI is a voltage-mode PWM controller from Texas Instruments designed for Step-Up/Step-Down conversion using Flyback or Forward Converter topologies. Its single-output Transistor Driver drives an external power switch, and the Positive, Isolation Capable output configuration means it can drive the primary-side FET in an isolated supply — the feedback loop crosses the isolation barrier via an optocoupler or transformer. Switching at 250 kHz, it sits in the sweet spot between magnetics size and switching losses — the 74% maximum duty cycle is typical for current-mode flyback controllers and limits the step-down ratio in a forward converter, but it is adequate for most flyback designs where the output is lower than the input. The 8.5V to 14.5V supply range suits a bias winding or a small linear regulator; the 8.5V UVLO threshold ensures the controller starts cleanly after the bulk input capacitor charges above the undervoltage lockout.
Control features and synchronous rectification
On Time Control architecture gives fast transient response without a traditional compensation ramp — the on-time is modulated directly by the error amplifier output, which simplifies the loop compensation for many designs. The Enable pin allows the controller to be shut down by an external signal, and the Soft Start pin programs the startup ramp to prevent output overshoot and inrush current. Clock Sync input allows multiple UCC2897PW-TI controllers to share a common switching frequency, which eliminates beat-frequency noise in multi-output supplies and simplifies EMI filter design.
Package, mounting, and temperature grade
Housed in a 20-TSSOP package (4.40mm width, 0.65mm pitch), the UCC2897PW-TI is a surface-mount controller that fits standard TSSOP-20 footprints. The 0.65mm pitch is fine enough to require careful solder paste stencil design but is well within the capability of standard SMT assembly lines. Supplied in Bulk packaging — not tape-and-reel. No moisture-sensitive reel baking is required if stored in the original dry packaging.
