What this PWM controller does in the supply
The UC3844J is a current-mode PWM controller for off-line and DC-DC converters. It supports boost, buck, buck-boost, flyback, and forward topologies. The 48% maximum duty cycle prevents transformer saturation in single-ended flyback and forward converters by guaranteeing a reset interval each cycle. Switching frequency goes up to 500 kHz, letting you shrink the magnetic components.
Hermetic 8-CDIP — the high-reliability package
This is the ceramic DIP version (8-CDIP, 0.300-inch body), not the plastic DIP or SOIC that most UC384x parts ship in. The hermetic cavity protects the die from moisture and contaminants — it's the package you spec for sealed modules, avionics boxes, or any assembly that sees conformal coating or harsh environments. Through-hole mounting means it goes into a socket or solders into plated through-holes. For a repair bench, that's a plus — you can swap it without hot air. For a new design, it takes up more board area than an SOIC-8 but gives you a mechanical anchor.
