What this level translator does that a fixed-direction buffer won't
The Texas Instruments TXS0104ERGYRG4 is a 4-channel bidirectional voltage-level translator that handles open-drain and push-pull signals without a direction-control pin. The auto-direction sensing means you don't need a GPIO to steer the data flow — the part decides based on which side drives the bus. Data rate tops out at 24 Mbps, which covers I2C fast-mode plus, SPI, and UART, but not high-speed USB or gigabit Ethernet.
At 24 Mbps, this translator handles most board-level serial buses: I2C up to 1 MHz (with appropriate pull-ups), SPI at 10–20 MHz, and UART at any common baud rate. It won't work for 100 Mbps Ethernet RMII or high-speed parallel memory interfaces. The output type supports both open-drain (for I2C) and push-pull (for SPI/UART), so one part covers both signaling styles without external level-shifter ICs.
