300 mA buck converter in a 2x2 mm WSON
The Texas Instruments TPS62242DRVRG4 is a synchronous step-down (buck) converter delivering a fixed 1.2 V output at up to 300 mA from a 2 V to 6 V input rail.
Switching frequency and inductor sizing
At 2.25 MHz, the switching period is under 450 ns. That allows inductor values in the 1 µH to 2.2 µH range — small enough for a 0805 or 0603 footprint — while keeping output ripple below 30 mV with a 10 µF ceramic cap. The trade-off is slightly higher switching losses than a 500 kHz part, but for loads under 300 mA the efficiency curve stays above 85% across most of the range.
Housed in a 6-WSON (2x2 mm) with an exposed pad, the part relies on the PCB copper pour under the pad for heat sinking. The 0.50 mm pitch WSON demands careful solder-paste stencil design; a 0.125 mm stencil thickness with a 75% aperture reduction on the pad avoids bridging.
