6 A buck in a 24-DSBGA — thermal budget first
The TPS62180YZFT is a 6 A continuous step-down buck regulator in a 24-DSBGA package. The 2 MHz switching frequency lets you shrink the inductor, but the BGA pitch means the copper area under the device sets the thermal resistance. Input range is 4 V to 15 V, covering 5 V and 12 V rails. Output is adjustable from 0.9 V to 6 V via a resistor divider — the 0.9 V floor suits 1.0 V or 1.2 V core rails, while the 6 V ceiling handles 5 V bus post-regulation. Synchronous rectification replaces the Schottky diode, cutting forward loss at the 2 MHz edge — the efficiency gain matters most at light load, where the inductor ripple current is a smaller fraction of the 6 A rating.
The 125°C ceiling is the silicon limit — the package thermal resistance will derate the output current above that ambient, so the actual load current at high ambient may be less than 6 A. Compared to the automotive-grade LMR33630APCQRNXRQ1, which also runs -40°C to 125°C but is limited to 3 A output, the TPS62180YZFT doubles the current in a smaller package — the trade-off is the DSBGA's thermal coupling to the board vs the wettable-flank QFN of the LMR33630.
