Synchronous rectifier — why it matters for your BOM
The integrated synchronous rectifier replaces the external Schottky diode that a non-synchronous buck would need. That saves one component and one pick-and-place step, and it improves efficiency at light loads — the low-side FET turns on instead of the diode forward drop. For a 1.5 A rail in a battery-powered or always-on system, the efficiency gain at 10-100 mA can be several percent. The 1 MHz switching frequency allows the output inductor to be in the 3.3-10 µH range, and the loop is compensated for ceramic output capacitors with low ESR. Layout rule: keep the input cap close to the VIN and PGND pins, and use a solid ground pour on the top layer under the exposed pad for thermal transfer.
