What this 1.2 A buck does on your board
The TPS62080ADSGR is a synchronous step-down converter from TI's DCS-Control family, delivering up to 1.2 A from a 2.3 V to 6 V input rail. The output is adjustable from 0.5 V up to 4 V via an external resistor divider. That 0.5 V floor is low enough to power the core voltage of a modern MCU or FPGA, but the 4 V ceiling means it cannot generate a 5 V rail — you would need a boost or a different part for that.
Thermal and layout — the 2x2 mm WSON is the constraint
The 8-WSON (2x2 mm) package with exposed pad is the limiting factor for continuous output current. Without that, the junction temperature will climb and the part will thermally cycle or hit the thermal shutdown threshold. The 2 MHz switching edge is fast enough that the switch-node ringing can couple into the feedback trace or the output sense line. Keep the inductor and the input capacitor loop tight — a 10 µF ceramic on the input within 2 mm of the VIN pin is the rule of thumb.
